Where do the Dirt Surfers live?

We live in central Michigan.  While our glorious state is surrounded by water, no one really surfs here, unless you consider sail-boarding "surfing."  The members of the band all enjoy mountain biking, and we have no shortage of excellent trails to ride.  Most Sundays, you'll find the Dirt Kahuna racing his Schwinn Homegrown Factory mountain bike.  Deadly Ed is more of a road racer,  but he rides his mountain bike every chance he gets.  Sniper Dude is more of a downhill guru, because he says "that's where the chicks are."

Who are the members of the band?

The Dirt Surfers were founded in 1998 by the Dirt Kahuna.  After obtaining a speck of success in an alt-rock band, the DK decided to quit singing about such important topics as bad driving and concentrate instead on instrumental rock.  The DK plays guitar, bass, keyboards, and programs percussion.

Deadly Ed is an excellent guitarist, and he offers a counterpoint to the DK's melodic themes.  When not jamming with the Dirt Surfers, Ed can be found playing some mean blues guitar.

The Sniper Dude likes to think he's a hot drummer, but really, he's only around because "this is where the chicks are."

How did the Dirt Surfers get their name?

Mostly from mountain biking.  Riding down the side of a hill at 30MPH is kinda cool, and the DK once screamed, "This is just like surfing, but only on the dirt!"  Other than that, the name came from the many bean and corn fields that surround our homes.

How long have the Dirt Surfers been around?

Long enough to know better.

How are the songs recorded?

Mostly at the DK's studio.  One of the Dirt Surfer's signature traits is the use of very clean electric guitar.  For the most part, the guitar is recorded straight into the digital recorder.  Most of the other instruments are created using Cakewalk software (which we highly recommend).  Occasionally we record stuff "live in the studio."

Do the Dirt Surfers play live?

How do the Dirt Surfers come up with their strange and funny song titles?

Believe it or not, the names mostly mean something and actually fit the song melody.  Listen to "Excuse Me, Is That Your Face?" and you can sing the title with the melody.  Quite often, we hear stupid phrases and write them down for potential future use.

Who are the Dirt Surfers influences?

When he was just a young boy, the DK's father played the Ventures on the hi-fi.  At the time, the DK didn't know how influential this was, because the DK prefered to listen to harder music, like Sabbath and Deep Purple.  Later, in his college years, the DK discovered the Clash, the Chameleons, and New Order.  While all of these bands are huge influences, three bands really gave the Surfers inspiration: The Feelies, for their subtle guitar rhythms, Shadowy Men On a Shadowy Planet, for their sense of humor and amazing melodies, and the Lively Ones, one of the original 60's surf bands who recorded the coolest version of "The Theme from Exodus" you'll ever hear.  Oh yea, the DK is also a HUGE Ennio Morricone (Clint Eastwood "spaghetti western" music) fan.
