Biography
"Those trailer park kids," Cornell muttered, "Smashed my mailbox." On the walk back to the house, Cornell thought, "Hey, that would make a great punk song title - 'Trailer Park Kids Smashed My Mailbox.'" At the time, Cornell had achieved the top chart position at MP3.com with his song, "There Is a God." Recording under the name Someone Else's Problem, Cornell crafted edgy alternative rock that pushed the edges of social commentary. After several attempts at writing a lyric for "Trailer Park Kids," Cornell gave up. But he did come up with a new instrumental track, so on a whim, he created a new identity and uploaded the song to the Internet under the name The Dirt Surfers. Cornell passion for mountain biking provided the new band name, and at the time he really thought that The Dirt Surfers would be a one-off project. This turned out to be quite wrong. The strength (and quirkiness) of the title pushed "Trailer Park Kids" to number one (out of more than one million tracks posted) on MP3.com. Amazed, Cornell set out to fully exploit the good fortune he had stumbled upon. Relying on his vast knowledge of rock and instrumental surf rock, Cornell wrote a batch of new instrumental tunes. Since quirky titles got songs noticed on a vast website like MP3.com, Cornell came up with an amazing batch of titles: "Pocket Pool," "My Weenie Dog Has a Goiter," and "Excuse Me Is That Your Face." All of these tracks charted in the top ten, so Cornell gave up Someone Else's Problem and put all of his effort into The Dirt Surfers.
The Dirt Surfers achieved over 300,000 downloads at MP3.com. Tracks like a tribute NASCAR's Dale Earnhardt ("The Intimidator") and "I'm So Pissed at Santa," a Christmas song," dominated the Surf Rock charts for months. When MP3.com entered the dark phase known as "litigation" with the RIAA, The Dirt Surfers continued to record new songs. Cornell always expected his music to be used in film, so when the producers of Accidental Icon: The Real Gidget asked for permission to use Dirt Surfers music in their new film, Cornell happily agreed to work with them. He mentioned another instrumental band to the Gidget team, Get Wet!, which was a project driven by Les Fradkin, a close friend of Cornell. After Cornell hooked Get Wet! up with Gidget, Fradkin asked The Dirt Surfers to join his label, RRO. Cornell began working on new songs that would be released on his first RRO recording that would become Kick Ass, Take Names. The new Dirt Surfers songs are a blend of modern garage punk, classic metal, and surf rock. There are three outstanding cover tracks, including "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown"), "Bang A Gong (Get It On)." and "Paint It Black." The licensing folks at ATCO Records liked The Dirt Surfers' blistering instrumental version of "Paint It Black" well enough to add it to their corporate "on-hold" music. "Norwegian Wood" was featured on 99.5 "The Mountain." Colorado's largest FM radio station on the November 5, 2006 "Breakfast With the Beatles" show. Kick Ass, Take Names is available from all major Internet download services. Cornell is currently writing new songs for the next Dirt Surfers album, to be released in 2009. In the summer of 2009, percussionist Tim Alderman, bass player Jeff Deason, and guitarist Mike Walz joined the Dirt Surfers and began preparing for a series of live performances. Besides playing original Dirt Surfers tunes, the band also selects classic and modern rock tunes that compliment the Dirt Surfers brand of high-energy rock and roll. |
