Telecom

Review by Doug Cornell

Moments after hearing the first few bars of "Sunday," the first track on this 4 track on-line sampler, it was obvious that Telecom would be a band worth paying attention to.  Not unlike the recent release from the Secret Machines, Now Here is Nowhere, Telecom's music features pile-driver percussion, layered synths, and hypnotic yet urgent vocals.  While the mix sounds vaguely familiar, it is nonetheless very listenable.

The next song, "Rain and I," is a muddy sounding mid-tempo number.  The verses are uninspired, but the chorus lifts the energy to an acceptable level.  With a title like "Moxie," you'd expect a chaotic blast of raw rock power.  The power is there in the intro and chorus, but the band uses crunchy guitars in the right places to create a worthy modern rock song.  The final song in this collection is "A Tiny Door."  An acoustic guitar riff shares a Chili Pepper/Zeppelin lineage, while a tambourine keeps the beat.  The vocals are repetitive, and this tune sounds more like an album outtake than a finished track.

Telecom shows promise.  A full album-length recording is required to determine if this band has what it takes to compete.
