| Stan Erhart |

| San
Francisco singer/songwriter Stan
Erhart exists in that blues-rock space occupied by
John Hiatt, Warren Zevon, and Dave Alvin. With his
weary, gravelly voice, Erhart exists well outside of the pop
mainstream, but should find fans among those who seek a rootsy,
American style of rock and roll.
A hard-driving electric guitar propels "Close Down," a fast-rocker with a hooky sing-along chorus. "Should Have Known" slows things down, as a bouncy bass creates a foundation for Erhart's vocals. Pretty-sounding guitars open "Confession," then the song chugs along in a mid-tempo mode. Another tune, "Let Me Down Easy" sounds very similar to "Confession." Erhart changes things up dramatically with "Please," as clean, slinky guitars bounce around the singing. "Mean Hearted Woman" is a fast blues rocker, and "I Don't Feel So Good" is a fun romp (with a scorching guitar solo) that is welcome on any dreary Monday morning. Erhart has an engaging voice and great guitar chops, but more songwriting variety would be welcome. While no one should be compelled to ape today's top 40 selections, he would benefit by taking more chances. |
