You know that movie
where Brendan Frazier emerges from a bomb shelter after 20 years of
hiding from the world? Listening to Playing Games With the
Sun makes you feel as if the 80's and 90's never happened, and
it's 1972 again, and bands like Bread, the Eagles, and the Beach
Boys are dominating the music scene.
Dickinson, from the
Boston area, is a pop purist. His arrangements are very simple
and AM radio ready. His clear tenor voice is an acquired
taste, but fits well with his solid songwriting and strong sense of
melody.
The acoustic guitars in
"The Same Blood That We Bleed" sound very similar to "Sister Golden
Hair." "Jellybean" is a poppy song that the current version of
the Beach Boys would love to get their hands on. Dickinson
gets tender with the piano ballad, "Happy New Year." He also
pays homage to his car ("Sick Car Blues"), and croons like Barry Manilow ("Black Cloud Zone"). The strongest song on the album,
"The Killer Made the Cover," finds Dickinson commenting about the
violence in our world today.
Overall, Playing
Games With the Sun is a consistent collection of retro-pop.
