A breeze is blowing
through the open windows and you can hear the mourning doves cooing
in the distant trees. It's time for a cup of hot coffee and
the morning newspaper. Ray Pavolvich's collection of piano
solos, All But One, would be the perfect accompaniment for
the beginning of such a fine day.
The 13 songs on this
album are all written by Pavlovich, yet they seem vaguely familiar.
I'm not going to try to convince you that I know anything about
popular piano music, but these songs are all expertly played and are
quite enjoyable. The songs are 180 degrees away from my
favorite piano player, George Winston - these aren't haunting
new-age tunes, but are simple, melodic songs that are quite pleasant
to listen to.
I've got an old upright
piano in the next room, and it would be nice to have Pavlovich
sitting there, coaxing the melodic "An Evening at Maxey's" or the
ballad "Back On My Feet Again" from the keyboard. The electric piano
has never been my cup of tea, but "Cocktails" is a pleasant number
that sounds like an early 80's TV drama theme song.
So instead of reaching
for some innocuous new-age music, give Ray Pavlovich a try. He
might be exactly what you are looking for.
