Null_Object - Null_Object

Null_Object

It's interesting to hear artists who use the latest technology to create their music.  L.A. guitarist Gary Hebert's new project, Null_Object, is an ultra-modern combination of guitars, loops, samples, and synths.  It's easy to imagine him sitting in front of his computer, happily cutting and pasting clever bits of audio into complete song structures.

This EP's six instrumental tracks expand the limits of guitar-rock creativity.  Hebert's guitar is the centerpiece, but he's 180 degrees away from the typical six-string shredder.  Instead, he relies on rhythm and complex textures to create his sound.  The bleeps and beats that introduce "Artifact" would be at home on Radiohead's most recent excursions, but thankfully, Hebert allows the guitar some space to expand.  "Retinal Scan" is a rocker that belongs in the next Terminator film, while the slow grind of "Nitrus" is unlike anything currently available.

If you are a fan of the more melodic side of Sonic Youth, or if you enjoy Tangerine Dream or Pink Floyd, then Null_Object will more than satisfy. Hebert is to be commended for having the nerve to create this uniquely satisfying, melodic instrumental rock.
