It's interesting how
geography influences music. Brit pop and So-Cal punk are
easily identified. Likewise East Coast rock and roll (mostly
from New Jersey or New York) was started by Bruce Springtseen, then
later evolved by Jon Bon Jovi. East Coast rock encompasses
anything from lush cinematics to straight-ahead arena rock.
Jim Pepe's, new album,
From Soul to Crown, is a hard-rocking album firmly entrenched
in the NY/NJ style. Pepe's clear tenor voice is backed by a
solid guitar/percussion rock outfit. The album's ten tracks
rock solidly - there's no attempt to cop a ride upon any current
trends in the popular music scene.
Stand out tracks include
"Demise," with its emotionally-charged singing and soaring electric
guitars, "Pyramids and Airports," a fast rocking track that would
please any Semisonic or Toad the Wet Sprocket fan, and "Glide," a
slice of nicely executed pop-rock. The album features chunky
hard-rocking tracks ("Demise") and cleverly executed arena rock
("There is a Light").
Pepe veers into
power-ballad territory with "Soar," and relies on his strong voice
to carry "Silhouette" and the piano ballad "Another Way."
From Soul to Crown
will please the legions of music fans who long for simpler,
harder-rocking times.
Raise your lighter to
the sky and scream for more.
