With nothing more than an acoustic
guitar and his voice, Columbus, Ohio's Frankie Cleary makes a
glorious racket.
Cleary's vocal style is vaguely
reminiscent of Ed Kowalcyzk
(Live). With an aggressive strumming style, these two
tracks, "On My Own" and "World Undercover" pack quite an
emotional wallop. "World Undercover" is particularly
powerful, as Cleary asks the question, "Why do we run from all
our fear?" The guitar starts out with a simple yet clever
melody, then steadily picks up momentum. While the track
clocks in at over 6 minutes, Cleary's voice and dynamic style
leave you wanting more.
"On My Own" begins with a nice,
folky intro. Within a few bars, Cleary belts out a
powerful coming of age tale, while the guitar chimes along.
As he wails, "You used to call me little child," you are
reminded of the challenge of moving away from the parents.
Very intense stuff.
Cleary is someone to watch - and he
needn't worry about hiring a backing band. The simple
production allows Cleary's full emotional range to shine.
