3 Kisses - Wings
Review by Doug Cornell
This four-song sampler from Austin, Texas outfit 3
Kisses is designed for fans of pure 80's girl band pop. Even though
there are two guys in the band, it's easy to imagine the songs on Wings
being played by the Bangles or Go Go's.
The musicianship on the songs is suitably loose, with
guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums creating a foundation for vocalist Tish
Meeks. "Yellow" opens with a brief blast of electric guitar, but
it's Meeks sassy vocals that provide a focal point. Melodic
keyboards and solid rhythm guitars propel the radio-friendly track
"Wings." The Bangles reference is most easily heard in the
flower-pop song "Wastin' Time." Bouncy guitars and Partridge Family
keyboards elevate this track to ear-candy status. "Undone" brings
back echoes of the band Lush, as the song combines a delicate layering of
vocals and instruments.
These four songs indicate
a certain direction for the band - girl pop/rock isn't exactly a popular
format these days, but give the band credit for finding a style and
sticking with it.
